Via Algarviana "a structuring project for the inner Algarve"
Via Algarviana is a pedestrian itinerary with an extension of 240 km, which will run through the inner Algarve, between Alcoutim and S. Vicente cape, passing through several villages like Vaqueiros, Salir, Silves, Monchique e Bensafrim, crossing a total of nine counties.
The Guerreiros do Rio River Hotel has special prices for the walkers and the BTT riders who intend to start in Alcoutim. Call number 281 540 170 or click here. to see the promotions.
The main goal of this project is to promote the sustained development of the hill areas of the Algarve, through the enrichment of its culture and the consolidation of small economic local initiatives, which will become the backbone of a network of rural paths, integrating and interconnecting paths that already exist (for instance in Cachopo, Barranco do Velho, S. Bartolomeu de Messines or Monchique), thus enabling the creation of similar projects in other places.
The Via Algarviana is also intended to promote the practice of pedestrianism in the area, as a part of ecotourism, thus contributing to diversify the touristic offer of the region, creating a new product, but equally fighting the sazonality of tourism. The project also aims to attenuate the desertification (human), which affects the inner areas of the Algarve, promoting the quality of life of the populations living on the hills.
The Via Algarviana will connect with several other routes, thus guaranteeing the walkers the possibility of selecting the routes according to their interests and physical capacities. Along these routes, it will be possible to select the path according to its difficulty, extension, landscape, botanic wealth, cultural offer, lodging conditions and restaurants, etc.
In the future we intend for the Via Algarviana to be a Grand Route (GR13) and simultaneously to become part of the Trans-European Routes, connecting in Tarifa (Spain), to the E4 (the route of the big mountains which starts at the Peloponesian coast , in Greece) and to the E9 (which connects St Petersburg, in Russia).

Born in 1995, a result of the exchange of ideas and the gathering of sinergies between the “Associacao Almargem” and the “Algarve Walkers”, with the goal of implementing a pedestrian route between the Lower Guadiana and the Sao Vicente cape, crossing the inner Algarve, the “Via Algarviana” has been approved in 2006 through an application to PROAlgarve by “Almargem”.
The project leader is “Almargem” which has as its partners the “Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento do Algarve”, the “Associação de Munícipios”, and the “Câmaras Municipais de Alcoutim, Castro Marim, Tavira, S. Brás de Alportel, Loulé, Silves e Lagos”. There are also others involved such as “Associacao In Loco”.
The total costs to implement the “Via Algarviana” are around 350 thousand euros, which will be mainly used in the equipment, signalling and promotion of the route. Beyond the financial support of the European Union, we have already guaranteed partnerships with all the “Câmaras Municipais” involved (through AMAL), but equally of other public entities cush as RTA, as well as the support of private companies.
